Hi everyone! 2004 was a big year for Marsh Madness in Houghs Neck. Years of planning, surveying, engineering and permitting are paying off in a big way.
The Post Island Marsh restoration is almost complete. We dredged the entire North West end of the marsh near the sea wall, adjusted the tide gate at the East end, and installed a new 24” culvert under Mallard Road. The hundreds of homes affected by this project will have better flood control, the elimination of a major fire hazard and mosquito control all in one! The increased tidal flow will provide a hatchery for fish, which will bring a multitude of birds to the area. Next, we begin planting and beautification.
So far, we have been working on First Marsh, Second Marsh and Third Marsh, the Rhoda St. Bridge and the Post Island Marsh. All this with City, County, State and Federal oversight. This type of work should take place all over the Houghs Neck peninsula.
My friend and neighbor, Jessica, built a beautiful website and in 2005, I promise to update it (www.marshmadness.org) at least once a month.
